This short ConnecTechAsia 2019 post-show report consists of facts, figures and DEVEO’s recommendations.

What is ConnecTechAsia?

ConnecTechAsia is held annually in Singapore and is billed as Asia’s mega technology event, bringing together Technology, Media & Telecom companies. Three shows are combined under one umbrella:

CommunicAsia: is Asia’s key ICT tradeshow and attracts ISPs, Satellite Operators & Asian MNOs. It brings together next-gen technologies for the telecom industries.
BroadcastAsia: features the latest disruptive & innovative technologies for broadcasting & digital media industries.
NXTAsia: a show for Asian digital enterprise transformation.

CommunicAsia & NXTAsia were both located at the Marina Bay Sands, and BroadcastAsia took place in Suntec City.

What are the key demographics of ConnecTech Asia?

In 2019 the estimated attendance figure was 40,000, with 1800+ exhibitors from 50 countries/regions. Half of those attending were from Singapore itself because it is free for locals to attend.
An estimated 25% were CxO or senior management profiles.
Most noteworthy for DEVEO’s clients is that only 5% came from Telcos (defined as Carriers, Mobile Network Operators & Data Communication Services Providers).
At BroadcastAsia there were 13 different pavilions, and at CommunicAsia/NXTAsia there were 27. This allowed exhibitors from each country or region to be grouped together.

What were the main topics & news discussed during CommunicAsia?

In general, the focus was very much on Asia, and how transformation in today’s digital age is possible.

Connectivity infrastructure is a key enabler for Digital Economies worldwide, including Singapore’s. ConnecTechAsia has always been a key telecoms calendar highlight, bringing the world’s leading players to Singapore to exchange insights, share best practices, and build the capabilities that will be necessary to bring about next generation networks.

5G Experience Zone
In common with many of today’s tradeshows, 5G was a hot topic. Therefore, a ‘5G Experience Zone’ was created to allow demo’s & use cases to be displayed.

Shaping Future Societies
This was the theme for 2019’s summit to find out what drives digital transformation in the region. The latest tech trends & innovations for business, cities, media and the economy were discussed.

AI Village
This was a dedicated area concentrating on Articifical Intelligence Solutions & case studies.

What were the main topics & news discussed during BroadcastAsia?

Over in Suntec City, BroadcastAsia focussed on the following areas:

  • IP Broadcasting
  • Live Production
  • Content Media Security
  • UHD/HDR
  • OTT & Alternative Content Platform
  • eSports

What recommendations can DEVEO give about this show?

Since this show is free to attend, it attracts around half of its visitors from Singapore. For the total volume of attendees, we haven’t seen any difference to last years levels.

Based on last year’s figures, we know that 5% of the show consisted of Telcos. We spoke to many international exhibitors who said that they would not attend again next year because of the low volume of international visitors. Overall, our outlook for this show from an international perspective is not hugely optimistic. That said, it remains one of the best tradeshows for Asian Telcos and Broadcasters.

BroadcastAsia was in a different location therefore it didn’t attract the same footfall. We know that in 2018 there were just 9525 attendees. Next year it will be moved to Marina Bay Sands & so all 3 events will be under one roof. As a result, we could see a higher number of attendees.

Finally, the show was previously organised by UBM who were taken over in June by events giant Informa. The benefits of Informa’s acquisition are still to be felt for ConnecTechAsia, we certainly didn’t notice a difference in 2019.
